For this illusion to work, you should look at the flag for about 15 seconds and then immediately look at the white space provided. The ghostly image you see in the white space is called an after image. After images are caused when the cones in your eyes grow tired and loose their sensitivity to the colours they are looking at. When this happens, you will see white light (a mixture of all colours), minus the colour your cones have become insensitive to. In this particular example, when you are look at the white background after staring at the image of the flag, the colours that you should see are the colours on the familiar American flag (red, white and blue) which are complimentary of the colours cyan, black and yellow that were used.

You can see how this optical illusion seems to move and shift? Most people can see this optical illusion move and shift if they look at it for a short while.
Since we live in a 3D world, our mind tries to convert a 2D object into a 3D one. In this optical illusion, we try to make sense of these 2D objects. The shading used is completely incongruous. The eyes lock onto a part of the illustration that looks appropriately shaded but then find it disjointed with shading in other nearby areas. The eyes keep jumping around the drawing trying to map out a 3-D solution that would make the shading illustration make sense, but it never seems to work.

Experts aren't sure, but many scientists believe that one reason people have difficulty with this puzzle is because your brain is "primed," or prepared, to picture things the same color as the written word. While most humans can see color, scientists aren't sure which animals can.

This is a 2008 winner for Best Illusion of the Year is a new afterimage illusion. To see the illusion for your self, watch this sequence of images for about 30 seconds (it takes at least 30 seconds for it to really work for me):

The illusion isn't really strong, so you may need to know what you're looking for in order to see it. What you should see is, after 20 or 30 seconds, the blank shapes start to be filled with a "ghostly" color. That's the afterimage, and though the actual colors only fill part of the the shapes, the afterimage tends to fill the whole thing. But that's not the neat part. The neat part is that the color of the afterimage (either red or green) depends on the shape of the blank figure! If it's a star (that is, if one of the four points is pointing straight up), the afterimage will be reddish, because red is the opponent color of the green in the colored figure of the same shape. If the same figure is shifted sideways 45 degrees, the afterimage is green, because the original figure of that shape was colored red. What's more, if you view one, and then the other, as in the series above, your after image immediately changes from one color to the other (e.g., red then green in the figures on the right side).

Green Heart Optical Illusion

Stare steadily at the dot in the heart for 30 seconds, then look at a piece of white paper. A faint Red heart surrounded by a bluish outline should mysteriously appear on the paper.

This is called an aftereffect. Staring at the heart overstimulates your eyes' photoreceptors, which are what absorb the light that stimulates vision. So even after you look away from the image, your brain is still receiving messages about it. What you end up seeing are called complementary colors. Red and blue are complementary colors of green and yellow.

Pink Rose Optical Illusion

Stare at the '+' in the middle of the first picture for 20 second, then quickly look at the '+' within the picture of a rose...

You should see now a color image of a rose (pink). This illusion is due to what scientists call ‘color afterimage’ effect. An afterimage is a negative ‘ghost’ of a color seen after prolonged stimulation of the eye. The odd thing about color vision is that pink or magenta color is not in the spectrum of colors (see below), meaning it cannot be generated by a single wavelength of light. Our brains interpret the color sensation of magenta/pink as ‘absence’ of green.
